23° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL

Balordi

by Majam Kubescha
Country: Italy, Germany
Year: 2005
Duration: 80

What's hidden within the walls of the Castle of Volterra? Biggest Renaissance castle in Italy, it now houses a top security prison. Most of its inhabitants come from the poorest South of Italy. Jailers have the same origins, too. Prince, Nicola, Vincenzo, Sabino and Adamo talk about their lives, before and after their arrest. Following their origins, the story leads us all the way to the South, to meet their families. What links their lives is always poverty and no prospect at all. Characters are portrayed together with other prisoners while working on an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's Three Penny Opera. Their final performance mirrors the grief of their condition: brought up in a society that has cut them off. For their entire lives.
"Everybody is equal before the law. But there's nothing more unjust than that." (M. Kubescha)
