Il canto dei nuovi emigranti

The Song of the New Emigrants

Country: Italy
Year: 2005
Duration: 53

This film is inspired by the poem Il canto dei nuovi emigranti by Franco Costabile. At a distance of 40 years from the poet's death, it tells the common story of a people through the life and works of the author. The harsh setting of Calabria, the wound of emigration, the absolute unconcern of institutions and politicians, the grief for a human condition with no way out - all treats of the poet's lifelong travel as episodes of a human experience which has both a familiar and a social value.
"Franco Costabile was one of the most important poets Calabria has ever had. He was a Calabrese poet and a universal poet, also, right in the way he was Calabrese. Because it was - and it still is - impossible to write real poetry, in Calabria, if you draw away from the condition of decay and subordination this land and its peopled have suffered from ages of domination up to today's underdevelopment." (A. Lavorato)
