Families produce aims in the shape of children to be brought up. But unless there's a hope for them to better themselves and their social status - which is something very unusual - children are sentenced to live that very same life. This fate causes great pain. And a great feeling of emptiness. Especially to the less gifted and educated. Those who are not aware of all this, thanks to their privileged condition, cannot pass judgement on the actions of those who endure that kind of life. It won't bring them to death, but it's as much painful as hunger. And even more. Because there's nothing that can mend this pain, while food can always save from famine.
"Do I have something to declare? I remeber getting through customs at the Swiss frontier. I had some wine hidden under the car seat as a present for my friends who had emigrated to Zurich: 'Nothing to declare?'-'Nothing'". (T. Cotronei)
