23° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL

Prima che arrivi il buio

Country: Italy
Year: 2005
Duration: 6\'

The images show a rite in a small portion of the sky in a landscape with no particular geographical features, which could be anywhere. The imaginary protagonists of the rite, real migrants, float in their abstract forms and create signs which are reconstructed in the visual field and dance their usual ritual before it gets dark, before night falls.

"The images are 'dirty,' but I preferred leaving them that way, coarse, with no special treatment during editing. I came across these images by chance in the sky above Via Teulada, in Rome, in December 2004. I saw how a natural spectacle, so commonplace that it didn't draw anyone's attention, could become a fascinating scenario onscreen…" (M. Casale)
