Un racconto incominciato

A Commenced Story

Country: Italy
Year: 2006
Duration: 80'

In the lunar atmosphere of an ocean dawn, three fishermen, illuminated by the artificial light of the street lamps, are sitting on a low wall and are motionlessly staring at the sea. This is how the story begins, as it takes us into the daily life of the inhabitants of Nicotera Marina, a tiny village on the coast of Calabria. A voice accompanies on this trip, a knowing and involved voice, that illuminates the humanity of the places, the bodies and the faces of this remote outpost of Europe.

"'Nicotera Marina is an agglomeration… of characters.' This is how Saverio, the narrator of the film, introduces us to the cosmos of a small town on Calabria's Tyrrhenian coast. An agglomeration, but also a community, albeit dispersed and full of contradictions, whose members seem to be characterized by their state of belonging and, at the same time, by a bond that implies repulsion, desire to escape. Nicotera Marina used to be a fishing village, but now it lives off real estate and tourism. Its inhabitants have always experienced a relationship with nature that is simultaneously symbiosis and battle, reverence and challenge." (F. D'Agostino, A. Lavorato)
