A Visit from the Incubus

A Visit from the Incubus

Country: USA
Year: 2001
Duration: 27'

Lucy, a young Victorian woman in the Old West, is being tormented by nightly visits from an incubus: a horrible demon who has sexual intercourse with sleeping women. Her friend Madeleine tries to console her, but is unable to help. When Lucy gets a job singing at the saloon, the Incubus has followed her there; and things take an unexpected turn as Lucy and the Incubus, amidst the rowdy cowboys and saucy can-can girls, have their final showdown.

“The reason the incubus is so interesting to me is because of its sexual element. It’s like those old fairy tales like Bluebeard, which were about teaching young girls about the fearfulness of husbands. In the same way, the film is about a young, inexperienced girl’s fear of sex, but also about her curiosity of it. The young girl has desires she can’t understand, along with wonder about sex and her own body. She unconsciously may want to be possessed by a stranger, at the same time feeling revulsion about everything male and sexual.”
