Adeul

My Son
by Jin-pyo Jang
Country: South Korea
Year: 2007
Duration: 109'

Lee Kang-sik is serving a life sentence for murder. For the last fifteen years he has been on his best behaviour and now he has been granted a one-day leave to visit his family. He wishes to meet his teenaged son, whom he hasn’t seen since incarceration, and as the day draws closer and closer, he thinks with both excitement and nervousness to all the things he would like to say to him. But his feeling isn’t exactly reciprocated: forced to grow up at an early age, his son has had a tough life, taking care of his grandmother on his own. In his eyes, he sees not a father, but a stranger, a criminal. How can Lee Kang-sik make up for fifteen years with just one day’s time and show all his love to his son?

“For me Adeul marks the first time I’ll be taking on a family issue as the main subject for a film. I attempted to paint a portrait of a fatherson relationship that is simultaneously universal and wholly special.”
