In a rural Cuban maternity clinic some women are giving birth. The doctors and orderlies bustle around, with no regard for their patients, whom they see as being the main obstacle to smoothly managed childbirth. The encounter between the two perspectives is violent. Yet, despite this antagonism the two sides unite to accomplish “The issue of the maternity always fascinated me, and I was sure I had to do something about pregnant women. At the beginning I thought of an experimental-poetic video, with lots of slow-motion shots of big bellies in a soft light, or something like that. Luckily, at some point I decided to visit the local hospital, and my view on the film changed completely.”

Biography

Pedro Freire
(São Paulo, Brazil), after a period studying theatre direction in Madrid, he graduated in cinema direction at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de Cuba. He’s directed two theatre plays and five short films, wrote screenplays for several short films and worked as assistant director for important Brazilian filmmakers as Karim Ainouz, Suzana Amaral, Paulo Morelli and Lucia Murat. He is currently writing the screenplay for his first feature.
