25° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL

Cinema de notre temps: John Cassavetes

Cinema of Our Time: John Cassavetes

Country: France
Year: 1998
Duration: 49'

“John Cassavetes will long be known as an actor, but it is obviously as a film-maker at the dawn of his career that he appears in this portrait. At the moment, when we meet him, he has already made three films: Shadows, an independent film shot in New York, and then Too Late Blues and A Child Is Waiting, two Hollywood experiences that he categorises as disastrous. He has just completed the shooting of Faces, which editing will require three years of work. What we are offering is a film about the birth of a film-maker. Three years later, Faces is finished, and Cassavetes stops over in Paris on his way to the Venice Film Festival. It is no longer the same man who talks but rather a more mature man, who looks inward and can draw lessons from his experiences. A man who tells us about America, the making of Shadows, the film about adolescence and hope, and Faces, the film about middle age and disenchantment.” (André S. Labarthe)
