A biography of Harold Louis “Doc” Humes (1926-1992) by his daughter. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Doc co-founded “The Paris Review,” wrote two acclaimed novels, and was a gregarious fixture of the cultural scene in Paris, London and New York. But in 1966, he went more or less crazy. Doc was a 1950s New York City intellectual, a 1960s free speech militant, and a 1970s visionary crazy genius. His story is the story of three decades of cultural history.

“I don’t want the film to be a valentine; I don’t want to simplify my father’s complexities or minimize his failures. He could be difficult, and destructive to those who loved him. I wanted to tell the truth of a complicated person, without resorting to stock stock footage. It’s a personal film, but the focus is on him, not our relationship. I stay at the edge of the frame, so as not to sacrifice the great wonder of documentary: that it is about the world with all the opportunity and responsibility to seek truth.”
