Between the meeting points and the places to pray of Milan’s Islamic community, these are the stories of Saadi Nassim, a Tunisian, and Sultan Mohamad, who were first under investigation, then arrested and eventually acquitted. Stories of people living in old warehouses that have been transformed into mosques, where they meet every Friday to pray, to look for jobs and to create a critical mass of people demanding the right to vote in a country that accepts them but doesn’t recognize them.

“I decided to undertake a journey within Milan’s Islamic communities. I asked them if I could participate in a day of prayers in the mosque and they said no; some time later, I repeated my question and they once again denied me access; I insisted, stating my purpose, and they finally opened their doors to me, but kept me under constant surveillance. When I asked why, they said they were protecting me. That day was followed by others, and during one of them, a man told me some things in Arabic. I told him I didn’t speak the language, and he smiled at me, thanking Allah.”
