The identity of a migrant population that spreads and reverberates in a formless Mediterranean, protected by high mountains, holding a thousand islands, all imaginary. At the end of the voyage, the discovery involves the modulation of “us,” in a spurious calibration that ranges from the intimate to the collective. “Ever since I’ve been thinking about this film, unexplainable apparitions of Arbëreshë have materialized in places far from the regions of the South. At a friend’s house in San Marino I met the son of an Arbëreshë teacher from Puglia; in Bolzano I met an Italo-Albanian writer who talked to me about his last novel, about abandonment and return. [...] I discover that before Pasolini died, he met with an Arbëreshë Papas and foretold their future… Maybe, to try to make some sense out of it all, I have to start over with the Albania of today, from the memory of pieces of a common, older history.”

Marco Bertozzi
(Bologna, Italy, 1963) graduated in Architecture in 1989 from the University of Florence with a documentary about his hometown, Rimini. He continued to study film with Ermanno Olmi. In recent years he has become involved in documentaries as a writer, theoretician, teacher and organizer of professional encounters. He has made documentaries about the urban collective imagery and cultural identities, winning numerous prizes. After receiving his doctorate in Film History and Philology, he began teaching documentary cinematography at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, at the Università Roma Tre, and at the University of Macerata. He has written numerous essays about cinema.
