“Is it real or a dream?” A man suffering from insomnia tries to recall how/if he has come to be shot in one of the city’s underground car parks. Through a fragmented non linear stream of events Tel Aviv is spliced through chaotic observations, a vague notion of reality, physical and mental spheres, drifting between the known reality and a hallucinatory one. “Insomniac City is an interlaced mix between reality and urban illusion, representing the current daily Tel Aviv, and an unstable radical shift of the city space where architecture is used as a material to express the human condition. […] It explores through video and sound, the hidden psyche in the urban texture and offers a wide gaze on a city in transit and shift while weakening the boundaries between reality and illusion, present and future, radical architecture and artificial islands. Through an insomniac like stream, the gaze drifts from external perception to internal suspension, while what we see and what we think we see mix and blur into a twilight zone.”
Biography
film director
Ran Slavin
(Jerusalem, 1968), a conceptual artist, works with various forms of audio and video,
making use of the interaction between cinema, digital and acoustic music and paint. He’s active in the world’s music and contemporary art scenes, and has created a multifaceted opus that is deeply urban, dark and often surreal. His sound installations are a mixture of sound processes and electro-acoustic manipulations, often based on
piano and guitar. His films, which are considered to be a real exploration of the potential of audiovisual expressiveness, are based on elements like color or the speed of images in a sort of visual and acoustic stream of consciousness. For his particular creations, Slavin has also created a program to control images and audio in real time: a platform in which sound and images are juxtaposed in a flow of images, shapes and surfaces.
