Joe Strummer: the Future Is Unwritten

Joe Strummer: the Future Is Unwritten

Country: Luxemburg
Year: 2007
Duration: 123'

A tribute to Joe Strummer, the famous leader of the Clash, who died in 2002. Julian Temple has based his film on a vast repertory of archive material, interviews, photographs, audio recordings, animated drawings and films he himself shot starting in 1976. The result is a complex portrait of one of the greatest rock stars ever, a restless, vagabond artist who relives in the memories of many people: Bono, Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmusch, Johnny Depp, Mick Jones and Joe Ely.

“To me Joe Strummer was a philosopher, he really distilled times we’ve all lived through. What he discussed and thought about was the nature of being human, what freedom was about: a lot of things that are being wiped out of the way we live now. His words to me were: ‘Thinking is the reason for getting up in the morning.’ So while on one level this is a film about loss, it is equally a celebration of all the things Joe stood for. He loved breaking the rules. Contradiction was his nature and it was crucial to me that the film would show that.”
