La voce umana

THE HUMAN VOICE

Country: Italy
Year: 2007
Duration: 20'

A free interpretation of the monologue by Jean Cocteau, La voix humaine. An actress goes to the theater shortly before the beginning of the play she stars in. As she prepares to go onstage and is putting on her makeup and costume, she talks by cell phone with the man she loves and with whom she recently broke off a five-year-long relationship. The woman alternates moments in which she tries to hide her deep suffering with others in which she confesses her pain to the man, even revealing that she had made a clumsy attempt at suicide the evening before. The show begins, she goes onstage, picks up a pistol, aims it at her temple and fires. But maybe it’s just a theatrical gesture.

“The idea was to move the monologue from the bedroom, where the play is traditionally set, to a theater, where a variety show actress alternates irony and pain in a metaphorical game balanced between fiction and reality.”
