A documentary following Michael Moore’s tour to launch Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), picking up on the politically hot atmosphere that made the director a real American left-wing icon. The movie is also a biography of Moore, from the time when he used to work for an independent newspaper in his native town of Flint, Michigan, to his first documentaries (including the famous and controversial Roger & Me, 1989), to his speech for the Oscar ceremony in 2003. “Manufacturing Dissent is a statement on freedom of speech. We are big believers in freedom of speech, questioning authority and speaking truth to power and that’s what this film is about. But as we followed Michael Moore around for over two years, filming his Slacker Uprising Tour, his one man effort to get out the youth vote in America and thereby unseat Bush, we soon realized freedom of speech, questioning authority and speaking truth to power is in the eye of the beholder.”
