Fifteen-year-old Marie is watching an exhibition of synchronized swimming and is fascinated by the best swimmer, beautiful Floriane. Floriane, who is already physically mature and attracts men, awakens feelings in shy Marie who, despite their different personalities, becomes her best friend. Between afternoons at the pool, parties with other young people and nocturnal meetings, Marie and Floriane, along with Anne, who is their same age, have their first sexual experience, creating intense and ambiguous sentimental ties. “Adolescence is a fundamental moment, the foundation of very strong emotions. I wanted to make a sort of X-ray of the birth of femininity. As Simone de Beauvoir said, ‘you aren’t born a woman, you become one.’ I wanted to explore this very precise and brief moment, a sort of baptism by fire which makes you more self-aware. The main characters portray three different approaches to femininity, three archetypes. Because you have to accept the idea that a film about adolescence has its stereotypes and you have to have fun using them.”

Céline Sciamma
(Cergy Pontoise, France, 1980) got her degree in French and studied screenwriting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Métiers de l’Image et du Son (FEMIS) in Paris. In 2005 she wrote the screenplay of Naissance des pieuvres, which won the 9TH Prix Junior for Best screenplay, which gave her the possibility to turn it into her first feature film. She has also collaborated on the screenplays of two short films by Jean-Baptiste de Laubier, Les Premières communions (2004) and Cache ta Joie (2006).
