25° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL

Ragazzo rosso

Red Boy
by Marco Zagaglia
Country: Belgium, Italy
Year: 2007
Duration: 9'

In a city in Belgium on the day Liege’s Standard football team might win the national championship, and the evening before a rally protesting the relocation of the factory he works in, the young Italo-Belgian worker Antonio leaves to go work for his uncle in Italy. The problem is that he still has to tell Gino, his union representative, who also happens to be his father.

“Ever since I was a child I have been immersed in an environment that mixes Italian and Belgian cultures together, leaving me balanced between the two, without the power, or the desire, to choose. […] I wanted to write the story of a twenty year old who finds himself at a turning point in his life. He decides to leave behind his work, union rights, his family and Belgium and return to Italy, where he was born. But he still has to find the courage to tell his father, who has also come to a turning point in his work as a union representative and who doesn’t want to even talk about Italy. It’s a problem of identity, a problem of roots.”
