She came out of nowhere. One day, she was just there. Or maybe I came out of nowhere. Anyway she was there and I was with her. In her apartment somewhere in Taipei with this baby. Waiting for the time when we stop wondering why. And this time comes. Quiet. Warm. We get closer. And closer. It’s pouring rain outside. Like it is never going to stop.

“I went to Taipei to do the spotting for Monstre, my first movie, that I eventually shot in Paris, and I met Lu Yi Ching there. I was hit by the difference between the character she plays in Tsai Ming Liang’s movies, who is always the slightly lunatic and unsexy old mother, and the reality: she is much younger, much more beautiful and feminine. Then she confessed that she would like to do something else, to play a woman in love, who does her hair and wears nice dresses. This very simple and luminous desire moved me. I decided to ask her to do a film with me, based on that and she said yes.”
