The Tree of Ghibet

The Tree of Ghibet
by Amedeo D'Adamo, Nevina Satta
Country: Italy, Cameroon, USA
Year: 2007
Duration: 80'

DJ, an eight-year-old child, is suddenly accused by his aunt of being possessed by devils and then abandoned on the hard streets of Douala, Cameroon. In order to survive he tries to join Ghibet’s gang of child prostitutes and street kids. The film features the kids as actors in a unique narrative combination of their stories and real life experience. It’s part of the project of The Traveling Film School, a group of filmmakers that travels the world teaching filmmaking and radical theatre.

“We wanted to make a film to help bring attention to the life of the billion children living in poverty. The film began as an experiment in filmmaking without a screenplay. Instead we created a simple plotline – a child is forced out onto the streets and must survive – and wrote it out as a series of improvs in radical theater to be enacted with people from the local area. This process came from two competing impulses.”
