ARMANDO E LA POLITICA

by Chiara Malta
Country: France, Italy
Year: 2008
Duration: 73'

For years, Armando incarnated supreme loyalty to the values of
social democracy. An orphan, to him the party was like his home.
His life revolved around trips to Eastern Europe with union groups,
party congresses, late evenings at the party offices, election campaigns,
battles for workers’ rights, the newspaper “l’Avanti!” tucked under
his arm, his pipe. All this, until he decided to vote for Berlusconi.
His daughter Chiara reconstructs that choice, which was repudiated
by her father and by many other Italians.

“The first thing I asked myself is as simple as it is absurd: did
Armando’s right-wing vote really exist? The question is constantly
postponed, the events in the film complicate it and make an answer
impossible. And so the question shifts, it becomes gigantic. And then
the film gave me the answer in real time, as I was making it, as
I observed him, an answer in the form of a question, an absolute
question that echoes fatally in the silence of the human being’s
limits of comprehension. And what if the truth were the mask
I insist on peeking behind?”
