BAM GUA NAT

NIGHT AND DAY
by Sangsoo Hong
Country: South Korea
Year: 2008
Duration: 145'

Sungnam is a forty-year-old award-winning painter and a married
man. He arrives at the Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris with a huge
suitcase, running away from a jail sentence received in Korea because
he was caught drunk and smoking marijuana. In Paris he spends his
days in the park or wandering aimlessly through the city.
He accidentally meets his ex-girlfriend Minsun, but the unexpected
reunion leaves him cold. Sungnam loves his wife and his thoughts
are constantly with the woman he had to leave behind on her own
in Korea.

“I shaped the story focusing on a man who leaves his house and runs
away for a ridiculous reason, and while doing so, he longs for his wife
at a distant place as he goes through several encounters. This evolved
into one man’s search for a path to express his specific existence.
I chose a narration using the man’s internal voice as well as a story
structure that gives a diary-like feel to it. I also chose to use a limited
way of exposing the man’s perception of the people around him.”
