CAJA CERRADA

Country: Argentina, Spain
Year: 2008
Duration: 72'

A group of fishermen from different countries spend their nights
aboard a boat. The darkness that surrounds them hides the horizon.
They routinely prepare the nets, then they take the fish and let them
fall into wooden crates. The work is gruellingly repetitive.
After completing their daily tasks they shut themselves up in the
cabin and tell themselves old stories.

“I wanted to use contemplation, patient observation and the
placement of the movie camera at a certain distance from the action
to show the flow of fishermen’s lives, their virtues and failures, their
happiness and misery. I think that film has to offer this possibility, since
over the course of our life we are submerged in chaos, imprisoned by a
frenetic pace that keeps us from stepping back and analyzing what is
going on. I always remember a quote by Emil Cioran that has guided
me in this sense: ‘We must draw back from the rhythm of our life
because it makes us insensible to it.’”
