CHI SI FERMA E' PERDUTO

THE ONE WHO STOPS IS LOST
by Giacomo Cesari
Country: Italy, Bolivia
Year: 2008
Duration: 25'

The shoeshine boy Paceño Diego Ortiz is missing his left foot. One day
he runs into a peddler who goes from village to village accompanied
by his talking rooster, whose sounds he seems able to interpret.
Encouraged by the words of the peddler, who insists that his gamecock
knows where the foot is hidden, the shoeshine boy goes on a long
voyage through the Andes in search of his missing extremity.

“One of the main characteristics of shoeshine boys who live and work
in the city of La Paz is their balaclava. They wear them to protect
themselves from the cold and to keep passersby from recognizing them.
Another typical character of Bolivian society is the pacpacu, who
is a peddler, a doctor, a pharmacist and a magician all in one. They go
from village to village before ending up in the cities, selling unguents,
essences and healing substances they extract from the animals that live
in their suitcases: serpents or iguanas. The peddler in Chi si ferma è
perduto
is based on the sinister figure of the pacpacu, with the talking
rooster taking the place of the reptiles.”
