The lives and works of three members of a family living in a mining
town in Western China. The daughter, Jingshui, wants to begin a new
life but must choose between love and living her dream. Her brother,
Jingsheng, wants to become a singer, but has neither money nor good
grades. The father, Ding Baogen, soon to retire, sets out to find his
missing wife.

“Coal miners’ life is difficult to understand. I was shocked when I saw
the coal miners’ life in the mountainous area in western China for the
first time. Everyone has his own ideal regardless of his standing and
race. However, the ideal always conflicts with the reality. The three
leading characters in the movie all want to change their lives. However
life is hard. People might not win the struggle against their destiny,
but they would understand the life during the struggle. Life never stops,
and all will fade away.”
