KURUS

DAYS OF THE TURQUOISE SKY
by Woo Ming Jin
Country: Malaysia
Year: 2008
Duration: 75'

Ali must come to terms with the fact that he has to grow up with a single father, who in turn has to defend himself from the attentions of his nosy neighbor, Leana, who seems to be interested in him. Ali spends his days with his friend Hassan, fishing and supporting the harassment of Eli and Iqa, testing all the difficulties of adolescence.
And when a new teacher, Miss Liew, arrives in class, Ali falls in love.

Kurus is a simple movie about growing up. I wrote the film using myself, and some friends, as the basis of the characters. The movie was originally made for Malaysian television, so we wanted a story that was poignant and relevant for Malaysians, and also accessible. I had a crush on my secondary school teacher when I was 16 or 17,
and back then things were always innocent and exciting. I guess the film is a sort of fantasy for me, because in real life my pretty teacher never noticed me!”
