France, May 2007. A portrait of left-wing young people the day
after the presidential elections. After the victory of the right wing
is announced the mood passes from dismay to shock, from tears
to anger. A young mother and her daughter wonder about their future,
in search of political and intellectual guiding figures.
“I wanted to create a forthright, unreserved film and thus I couldn’t
disguise my innocence, much less my daughter’s, behind a reflection
or a film that was too articulate. I wanted it to be an instinctive film
above all. I wrote it very quickly, in one day, giving free reign to my
impulses. I told myself: everything I wrote I have to shoot, without
trying to refine it. I wanted to take the responsibility for the most
confusing and vague aspects of the film and the fact that it didn’t go
through the traditional production channels let me do so. If we had
searched and waited for financing before beginning to shoot, the film
would have been lost right from the start. Also, I think that the true
terrain for shorts must be experimentation.”

Caroline Deruas
Caroline Deruas became fascinated with cinema through the films of François Truffaut and Marco Bellocchio. After some experience working on sets and two experiments in Super8, Les Indolents and Le Rêve d’Elli, in 2006 she debuted as a director with the short L’Étoile de mer. She worked as second assistant director for Philippe Garrel for the films Night Wind and Wild Innocence. In 2005 she played the role of Léa in Regular Lovers. In 2007 she was assistant director in Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s Actresses. She is now working on her first feature film, Les Enfants de la nuit, and is collaborating on the screenplay of Philippe Garrel’s next film.
