Melanie lives with her father, her older brother Knut and works
as an assembly-line worker for an airline catering outfit. She looks,
dresses and acts like a boy, and people frequently take her for one.
When her brother puts pressure on her to start looking for a meaningful
relationship, she claims she already has a boyfriend and pays the new
Portuguese co-worker, Nuno, to play the part of her boyfriend at Knut’s
engagement party. When Melanie is mistaken for a boy by the
14-year-old hitchhiker Jenny, she grabs the opportunity to escape
her dreary life and reinvents herself. Jenny and Mel fall madly in love,
but it is only a matter of time until her lie will be discovered.

“With admirable fearlessness Mel throws herself into the search
of her own identity, inspired by the great power of first love.
She oscillates between masculinity and femininity, testing herself.
Up to the very end she won’t let anybody pin her down for one role.
The realization that identity is fluid, and not carved in stone, is the
highly optimistic message of the film.”
