A long journey through the few hundred square metres of piazza “I’d like to have Gogol’s voice and be able to say, like he does of the
Municipio which takes us through different historical eras and in
different social context through different languages. Within the square
there are many different places, which tell the story of the city but the
people who walk across the square also have a story to tell: the story
of our time, a story in which the present is at times too present and at
times forgotten.
Nevskij Prospect in St Petersburg, piazza Municipio in Naples
‘is everything’. And like him, to start describing the details, to observe
this square under the microscope, to tell its story in a simple and linear
way, to describe the ravines and the recesses, the thousand and one
activities present on its stones, in its gardens, buildings, tunnels... but
I can’t. Perhaps because, by making a film about this square which is
everything, I didn’t want to make a film about a location. Rather a film
with a location, where I could record the fact that the results of the
minor daily actions of the people who live in a small portion of the
world, do, after all, create its history.”
