NIKOLI NISVA SLA V BENETKE

WE'VE NEVER BEEN TO VENICE
by Blaz Kutin
Country: Slovene
Year: 2008
Duration: 62'

Tone drives from Germany to visit his son Grega and his daughter-inlaw
Masha. Though nobody talks about it, something horrible has
happened. In attempt to ease their pain for a moment, Tone takes
the young couple out for an ice-cream and so begins their drive
around the countryside. On the road, Grega and Masha experience
sudden changes of mood. They suddenly get aggressive, saddened,
cheerful, nervous, depressed. They are together but each on their own.
And the gap between them is growing.

“I wanted to get as close as possible to the feeling of observing someone
as if we were sitting at the next table secretly watching them. I wanted
to give the viewer the time and the chance to do so, to notice details
or hidden emotions, without disrupting with any unnecessary cuts.
The scenes are static and the camera does not move once, similarly
as Masha, Grega and his father are trapped in their situation. What
is essential for me are these three people’s gestures, looks, reactions
and interactions while they try to deal with each other.”
