Adolescent Rita owes her name to a film star who was adored by her
grandmother, a former actress who is now dead. She lives in an old
section of Manila with her mother, who is always busy but who loves to
watch films on TV, and her aunt, who has a business. Rita’s life is told
day by day through scenes of daily routine but also through clips from
old films from the 1930s. A while later, Rita has grown up and become
independent; she works in her aunt’s DVD store. In the vacuum of an
existence that is always the same, Rita finds the strength to change and
leave Manila.
“While this film is about the movies, it is also essentially about growing
up. As much as I am mapping my childhood experiences in
documentary style, this film is also about everyone’s efforts to make
sense of their own pasts. Similar to the experience of looking through
one’s own photo album, the search is fragmented but essential process
that makes way for present meaning.”

Raya Martin
Raya Martin (Manila, Philippines, 1984), a usual guest of TFF, won the Lino Miccichè Award in Pesaro with Short Film About the Indio Nacional (2006), and got a special mention in Marseilles with Autohystoria. In 2008, his film Now Showing participated to the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs and in 2009 Independencia participated to the section Un Certain Regard at Cannes.
