OF TIME AND THE CITY

OF TIME AND THE CITY

Country: UK
Year: 2008
Duration: 74'

The film is a portrait of Liverpool which the City Council commissioned
to be part of the celebrations for its designation to European Capital of
Culture 2008. The key word is memory. Terence Davies returns to visit
the places and the time of his childhood, using rare archive materials
and more recent images. These are integrated by the voice-over author
with quotations from poets such as T.S. Eliot and Emily Dickinson and
by a soundtrack which blends classical music pieces and traditional folk
songs.

“Going back to Liverpool was difficult. Lots of places I knew have gone;
others are blighted by drugs: something that would never have
happened in my day. It reminds you of people who are no longer there
and it gives you a window on death. British stories like Of Time and
the City must be told by British filmmakers. There can only be truth
in a story which is truly specific to a time and place. And it is in that
truth that universal appeal will be found.”
