TORINO 26: FEATURE FILMS COMPETITION

PRINCE OF BROADWAY

PRINCE OF BROADWAY
by Sean Baker
Country: USA
Year: 2008
Duration: 100'

Lucky is an illegal immigrant from Ghana in New York. He lives
in the Fashion District and earns his keep selling counterfeit goods to
buyers and tourists. His best friend too, Levon, a Lebanese-Armenian,
sells pirate versions of major brands. Lucky divides his free time between
his friend and his girlfriend and anything seems possible for him in the
neighbourhood. But his world is turned upside down by the arrival
of a former girlfriend who literally thrusts a child into his arms, assuring
him its his, and then makes off.

“Manhattan’s wholesale clothing district is the most vibrant part of
the city. Even though I’d lived in Manhattan for close to 20 years, every
time I entered the district, I felt that I was experiencing the city for
the first time. I was quite aware of the feeling that the district gave me,
and realised that placing a child in the centre of this chaos would
not only be dramatic, but hopefully get the audience.”
