A typical night, from four o’clock on a Friday afternoon to Saturday’s
dawn, in the lives of Yvonne and Homer, a young couple of Native
Americans who have left their reservations to live in Los Angeles where
they share a two-room apartment with the Mexican Tommy and other
four friends. The young men set off at nightfall to go drinking, play
cards, pick up girls, fight and dance. Yvonne goes to the movies on
her own and, at the end of the show, she wanders through the city until
finally she arrives at the apartment of a girlfriend, where she decides
to stay the night.

The Exiles was conceived to reveal the complex problems of the
Indians in the city. Instead of leading an audiance through a sequence
of problems-decisions-action-solution on the part of the characters,
we sought to photograph the infinite details surrounding these people,
to let them speak for themselves, and to let the fragments mount up.
Then, instead of supplying a resolution, we hoped that the picture
would become, to the viewer, a revelation of a condition about which
he will either do something, or not.”
