THE UNDERCOVER MAN

THE UNDERCOVER MAN
by Rossella Biscotti
Country: Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland
Year: 2008
Duration: 30'

The interview takes place in a small room, passing time is marked
by a recorder and an old clock. A light bulb illuminates the desk
at which a man and a woman are sitting face to face. He is Joseph
Pistone, an FBI agent who, for six long years, as Donnie Brasco had
infiltrated one of the most powerful families of the American mafia.
This noir atmosphere recreates the period, with the help of original
FBI footage that show the mafia bosses in their daily life and reveal
the double life of agent Pistone.

“In The Undercover Man, Pistone portrays himself inside a film
noir setting. This fictional atmosphere underlines the fact that Joseph
Pistone belongs to an underworld that is not understandable from the
point of view of a normal citizen. On the other hand, scenes from FBI
surveillance footage show us the daily activity of gangsters as though
they were typical scenes from Scorsese’s movies. Some of the questions
are from trial transcripts. The questions become an attempt to break
down the wall of a bigger system; they reveal the failure of our tools
of information.”
