TRILOGIA: IL PENSIERO, LO SGUARDO, LA PAROLA

TRILOGY: THE THOUGHT, THE LOOK, THE WORD

Country: Italy
Year: 2008
Duration: 60'

Three small films offering three reflections on man’s senses and
knowledge. In the first episode, Emmer offers an anthological and
didactic overview of the precepts of ancient philosophy, from Greek
civilization to Roman times. In the second, as he did at the beginning
of his career, he works with a vast repertory of images and analyzes the
“history of the look” in visual arts, from prehistoric graffiti to Medieval
altar-pieces, Impressionist and Cubist paintings and contemporary
billboards. In the third episode, he recounts a solitary day in his
mountain home with irony and wit, musing on the intellectual
reflections of writers and thinkers, relating to his personal experience
not only the words of oral tradition and popular culture but the writings
of geniuses like Shakespeare, Spinoza and Gogol.

Biography

film director

Luciano Emmer

Luciano Emmer (Milan, Italy, 1918) moved to Rome in 1938 and, with his friend  Enrico Gras, made many documentaries about famous artists of the past. After being exiled in Switzerland, in 1950 he debuted in narrative cinema with Sunday in August, the first of a long series of portraits of Italian lower-middle-class society, which he wrote with  Sergio Amidei. During the 1960s and ‘70s, he shot clips for Carosello, reports and television series, and in 1990 returned to cinema with Basta! Ci faccio un film. He then made two full-length fiction films, A Long Long Long Night of Love (2001) and The Water... the Fire (2003), both selected in Venice. In 2004 the Torino Film Festival dedicated a complete retrospective to his opus.
