UN VIRUS DANS LA VILLE

A VIRUS IN THE CITY
by Cedric Venail
Year: 2008
Duration: 80'

At the beginning of the 1990s, the French-Israeli artist Absalon
conceived a ‘life project’ that was radically different from one’s usual
aspiration for a better life. To get his project underway he built six small
cells, six individual houses for the world’s big cities. Since Absalon’s
death, his cells can be found in the most important international
museums where they no longer show their purpose, nor their effects.

“Today, Absalon’s cells bear witness to a life that never took place, to
a work that should have been carried out elsewhere. His uncompleted
project will forever embody a suspended process. To look at it, to
understand it means to already imagine it, to project it, like a film
made of images and sounds. This is how Un Virus dans la ville came
about, in that indefinite space between a work and its spectator. I tried
to transport the cells outside the museums and give them back their
vital dimension as a project, to reinsert them in the world they were
destined for.”
