UNIDAD 25

UNIT 25
by Alejo Hoijman
Country: Argentina, Spain, Netherlands
Year: 2008
Duration: 90'

Simón Pedro, a 18-year-old prisoner, is transferred to the Penitentiary
Unit 25, the only church-prison in the world. Simón comes from an
ordinary jail, where thousands of prisoners stay in little overcrowded
rooms and murders and rapes happen everyday. In the Unit 25
everything seems to be different. The atmosphere is calm and the
prisoners seem relaxed. But to enjoy the benefits of this peaceful jail,
Simón will be forced to convert to evangelism through an intense and
wearing religious indoctrination.

“Evangelism is the religion that is making efforts the most to recruits
of new members in South America and the number of believers
is growing extremely fast. The conversion is advantageous for the
prisoner of the Unit 25 and it is also a sort of transaction; as a matter
of fact, when they accept the rules they can live their detention more
quietly. But what must these people give in exchange for what
they obtain? Should not the imposition of a certain vision of the world
be considered as a form of violence?”
