Wendy Carroll is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska, in hopes of a summer “I feel some resistance towards this film. I felt it making the film and
spent working at the North-western Fish Cannery and of the start of
a new life with her dog Lucy, but when her car breaks down in Oregon
her fragile financial situation comes apart. Wendy will have to face
batches of more and more problematic economic issues with long
run repercussions for her and her dog.
now I am feeling it while talking about it. In a sense I felt “exposed”,
vulnerable. And unlike my other films, in this one there were some
narrative conventions which had to be respected. And I had to surrender
myself to them, against my will. At last, I was also terrified to be
sentimentalist: it is a film about a woman and a dog… in some way
it is a western influenced by Bresson. And it is on purpose that the
economy of the shooting reflects the economy of the situation
experienced by the character too“.

Kelly Reichardt
Kelly Reichardt (Miami, Florida), after making various Super8 videos at the Massachusetts College of Art, moved to New York in 1988, where she worked for the directors Todd Haynes, Hal Hartley, David O. Russell, Mark Levine and Norman René. In 1993 she debuted with the full-length film River of Grass, which was projected at the Sundance Film Festival and at the Cinema Giovani in Turin, and cited as one of the best films of 1995 by “The Boston Globe,” “Village Voice,” and “Film Comment.” In 1999, she directed Ode, inspired by Herman Raucher’s Ode to Billy Joe, presented at New York, Rotterdam and Venice. In 2004 her short film Travis was screened at Torino Film Festival.
