DIAL M FOR MOTHER
A two-channel video installation in which each screen shows scenes
from three films by John Cassavetes, A Woman Under the Influence
(1974), Opening Night (1977) and Gloria (1980), all of which star
Gena Rowlands.
“These excerpts are mounted by Eli Cortiñas so that a form of zapping
between differing sequences – isolated from the film roles – produces
new characters, and a completely new scenario. Apart from found
footage Cortiñas uses telephone conversations with her own mother
which were recorded over a period of four years, interlinked with the
fragments of film. These excerpts are mounted so that a new scenario
emerges in which her own mother becomes the protagonist’s fictive
mother on screen. The interplay between real and imaginary space,
documentation and fiction, as well as off-screen and on-screen elements
serve to make up the complexity of this work.” (Petra Pechtheyden)
Biography

Eli Cortiñas
Eli Cortiñas (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, 1976) studied at the European Film College at Ebeltoft, Denmark between 2001 and 2002. In 2001, she made the short Buñuel’s Dream, followed by Familiar Faces in 2003. She studied at the Kunsthochschule fur Medien in Cologne for the next five years. Her two video
installations have been exhibited in various galleries and museums, including
the Guggenheim Gallery in Los Angeles, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris,
the Liste trade show in Basel, the Columbus Art Foundation in Leipzig
and the Waldburger Gallery in Brussels. In 2006, she made the video No Place
Like Home and the short 2 or 3 Things I Knew About Her. After Dial M for
Mother, she began working on the two-channel video Bird, Cherry, Lover.
