THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARIA
The Romani family Levak lives near Venice; they have decided to settle
down and embrace the evangelicalism. The two heads of the family,
Maria and Stanco, have built a true separate world that doesn’t seem
to feel any outside influences. Their gradual loss of their condition
as a minority and their contact with the evangelicalist religion, which
can influence every aspect of public and private life, has produced
new laws and a new social body that is far from the stereotypes.

“Absorbing the widespread discrimination toward the Romani people,
thirty years of assimilating media-fed racism, the present achievement
of bourgeois status and the end of the nomadic way of life generate
guilty feelings and a need to repress, as well as a desire for global
salvation. The film proceeds through gradual revelations and Maria
is the primary source of these revelations. The personal way she fights
the opaque, indefinite muddle of their artificial world sheds light once
more on history that has been hidden away.”
