27° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL

IO LA CONOSCEVO BENE

by Antonio Pietrangeli
Country: Italy, France, GFR
Year: 1965
Duration: 122'

I KNEW HER WELL
Adriana, who is just twenty years old, has arrived in Rome from Pistoia.
She hopes to make a name for herself in show business and throws
herself generously into that environment in which she passionately
hopes to be accepted. She changes jobs and men, meets people who
to different degrees are part of that world but her dreams of success
and fame never seem to come true. The continuous frustrations end up
becoming too much for a country girl armed with only her naiveté.

“In the spring of 1961 I approached dozens of girls who were hovering
on the fringes of show business, a shadow world of small-time actresses,
models and the like. I conducted a true sociological survey, with forms
and parallel investigations. Naturally, these girls were hale, hearty and
maybe even satisfied. All their lives were surprisingly similar and equally
miserable, even if the girls who discussed them with me were totally
unaware of the fact. This survey, with the overpowering evidence of
truth, brought to life the character of Adriana Astarelli.”

Biography

film director

Antonio Pietrangeli

Antonio Pietrangeli (Rome, Italy, 1919- Gaeta, Latina, Italy, 1968) debuted as
a film critic in magazines like “Cinema,” “Bianco & Nero,” “Si gira” and “Star.”
He later helped write many screenplays, including Lost Youth by Pietro Germi
and No Greater Love by Roberto Rossellini. The first film he directed,
Empty Eyes (1953), already shows his interest in female psychology, an aspect
shared by many of his films, such as March’s Child (1957) and Adua and
Company
(1960). In 1961 he directed Ghosts of Rome, the year later The
Visitor
(with Ugo Tognazzi as main character) and in 1965 I Knew Her
Well
, which won three Silver Ribbons in 1966. Two years later, Pietrangeli
drowned during the shooting of How, When and with Whom. The film was
released posthumously in 1969.
