L'ULTIMA ISOLA

THE LAST ISLAND
by Margherita Cascio
Country: Switzerland, Italy
Year: 2009
Duration: 25'

THE LAST ISLAND
Roberto lived for several years on Alicudi: the smallest of the Aeolian
islands. He went there once on vacation and remained there for ten
years. Eight years have passed since he left the island and he has
decided to return there with his son to show him where he was born.
The passing landscape seen from the train window reveals the essence
of a man who, fearfully, returns to visit the place which welcomed him
many years before. Memory mingles with the present. The voyage
becomes the constant search of an entire life to find a place to call
home.

“I have always been fascinated by the theme of journeys. To leave,
to move around, to search, stop, leave once again. This is probably
in part because of my family history which, like that of many people
in Switzerland and in Europe, is tied to migration. The idea was to
dilate the journey and turn it into a continuous dialog through my
questions, the excitement of Samuel, the son, who for the first time
is returning to the island he left when he was very young, and the
memories of Roberto, the father.”
