THE LAST ISLAND “I have always been fascinated by the theme of journeys. To leave,
Roberto lived for several years on Alicudi: the smallest of the Aeolian
islands. He went there once on vacation and remained there for ten
years. Eight years have passed since he left the island and he has
decided to return there with his son to show him where he was born.
The passing landscape seen from the train window reveals the essence
of a man who, fearfully, returns to visit the place which welcomed him
many years before. Memory mingles with the present. The voyage
becomes the constant search of an entire life to find a place to call
to move around, to search, stop, leave once again. This is probably
in part because of my family history which, like that of many people
in Switzerland and in Europe, is tied to migration. The idea was to
dilate the journey and turn it into a continuous dialog through my
questions, the excitement of Samuel, the son, who for the first time
is returning to the island he left when he was very young, and the
memories of Roberto, the father.”

“I have always been fascinated by the theme of journeys. To leave,
Margherita Cascio (Lugano, Switzerland, 1985) studied philosophy and theology in Lugano before moving to Geneva to study at the Haute école d’art et de design, where she graduated in July 2009. In 2004, she made her first
documentary, Elvezia, followed by Quanto rumore fa Palermo in 2006.
That next year, she made the short Amodomo. She became the director
of photography for the short Corps incompris by Sergio Da Costa, and
in 2008 for La Svizzera contro Rigazzi, a ten-episode TV series of RSI, the Swiss radio and television broadcaster, and for the short documentary Répétitions mécaniques by Juan Pablo Fuenzalida, which he also edited. In the same year she directed the short Mangiatene e bevetene tutti.
