LA TERRE DESSOUS MES PIEDS

THE EARTH UNDER MY FEET
by Sophie Sherman
Country: France
Year: 2009
Duration: 20'

A young girl is walking in a forest. She digs holes with her bare hands
and thinks about religion. As she recites prayers in her mind that
become a dialog with God, she discovers that she has lost her faith.

“As a child I had a very religious education and The Earth under My
Feet
is based on my experience of the loss of faith. My desire was to
make a film with a dark fairy-tale tone. A young girl who we know
nothing about walks in a forest. The forest is a place for her to think,
to realize she doesn’t believe in God anymore. I wanted to use two
languages not only because my mother tongue is both French and
English, but also because I wanted to create a shock, an opposition
between faith (French) and its loss (English). I used the sound to create
an oppressive and disturbing atmosphere which inspires fear and makes
nature vibrate.”
