MEDALIA DE ONOARE

MEDAL OF HONOR
by Calin Peter Netzer
Country: Romania, Germany
Year: 2009
Duration: 105'

THE MEDAL OF HONOR
Ion is seventy-five years old. His relationship with his wife Nina is compromised by her silence and indifference and his son Cornel still bears him a grudge because many years ago he had denounced Cornel to the police to keep him from fleeing Communist Romania. One day, Ion receives a medal of honor from the Ministry of Defense for his heroic deeds during WWII. This seems to give his life some meaning once again and convinces him that he can win back the esteem of his family.

“The moment in which Ion rediscovers himself is impressive because its dramatic construction combines irony, tenderness and the tragedy of the situation which is about to follow. Ion is unable to understand reality the same way as, years before, he was unable to understand the desperate gesture of his son who wanted to leave the country. And even if his wife suddenly starts talking, between the two of them lingers the same silence and, perhaps, a greater pain for Ion who, for an instant, felt appreciated and fulfilled as a human being.”
