NE CHANGE RIEN

by Pedro Costa
Year: 2009
Duration: 99'

CHANGE NOTHING
In the half-light of a recording studio Jeanne Balibar starts to sing
Torture, by Kris Jensen. She then works on composing songs for
a new album with the guitarist Rodolphe Burger. This is the beginning
of a voyage that takes the French actress and singer from a rooftop
apartment in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines to the stage of a Tokyo café,
amidst rock concerts and singing lessons.

“Music is the only art I practice which is not based on the staging of
an antagonism, as opposed to theatre or cinema, which can never exist
without a struggle to death between the characters. In music, one
can find unison, harmony, syncope even. There, I can find a kind of
freedom, which, even if it is also a battle, never comes to a clash. And
there, I seek abandon. Playing music always holds a wonderful promise
of freedom and selflessness to me. Like a child who, supported by love,
a caring eye, and attention (as in rhythm, melody and harmony),
leaves his mother’s arms and starts walking alone throughout the
whole wide world, free in body and soul.” (Jeanne Balibar)
