John was separated from his mother when he was only five years old and was brought up by his strict Aunt Mimi. The boy’s childhood is marked by the coldness and silence of his aunt, who keeps the family’s secrets. When John turns fifteen he discovers that his mother Julia, who he thought was far away, actually lives only a few kilometers away with her new family. Julia is a source of constant surprises for her son. Her personality is the opposite of Mimi’s, she helps him discover rock’n’roll and Elvis’ movies, feeding his passion for music. During those months of revelations and radical change, John meets the guitarist Paul and, when Julia suddenly dies, he and Paul throw themselves into the adventure known as the Beatles.
“There were many levels on which this film appealed to me. I felt I could understand where Lennon came from because of his creative mind and the occasional moments I border on thinking I might be mad because my mind never stops! I think also both of us had turbulent backgrounds so there were lots of parallels and many elements about the story I felt akin to”.
