VIDEOMAPPINGS: AIDA, PALESTINE
The inhabitants of the Aida camp, Bethlehem, draw mental maps
of the places around them and tell the stories related to those subjective
geographies. Step by step, from drawing to drawing, the refugee camp
and its surroundings unveil and the inhabitants talk about their routes
and about their attempts to deal with the state of siege they live under.
“There are places that reappear from one drawing to another, each time from a different point of view. They let us melt together fragments of the various maps and slowly construct our personal mental territory. Thus, there is non-linear progression that is almost rhyzomatic. After which there is the camp, there is the descent through historical time to the first tent that was erected there, and then there are the paths
that various individuals have taken to leave. And there are the obstacles
that made these paths dangerous. There are openings, escape routes
and then, despite everything, the final imprisonment, with the wall
closing up all around a house.”

Till Roeskens
Till Roeskens (Freiburg, Germany, 1974)
has exhibited works, installations and
photographs in places such as the
Le Plateau Center for Contemporary
Art in Paris, the Centre européen action
artistique contemporaine in Strasburg,
Language Plus in Quebec and the
Museum of Modern Art in Collioure.
In 1999 he published the first of
a series of photographic books, Courts
fragments d’un long voyage sans
retour, and in 2001 he shot his first
feature film, Aperçu, followed by
Mots/Choses in 2004. In 2007, he
participated in a collective film entitled
Agence d’exploration de
proximité/Creil. In 2008, he made
the short Monsieur Toulemonde in the
ARTE studios in Strasburg. He lives in
Marseille and is presently shooting his
first feature documentary in Provence.
