cold water of the sea

A young, well-off couple from Costa Rica are on vacation on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. One dark night they come upon a young girl who says she has run away from home to escape her uncle’s attentions. The next morning the little girl has disappeared. The young woman, who is often left on her own by her companion, can’t stop thinking about what might have happened to the girl but she feels unable to leave the safety of her hotel room to go down to the beach and search for her. When she finally gets up the courage to do so, her encounter with the girl shows her the depth of her solitude and the limitations of her privileged life.

There is a particular feeling of paralysis that I want to capture here; one that is particular of a small, traditional country, where nothing ever happens, and youth is still seen as a disease best cured with time and patience. And one that is particular to young girls, who get tangled in a web of doubts and hesitation, their desires getting crushed into a constant anxiety that ends up defining them. This web is made of very fine, invisible threads.
