One day, Ju-yeon, the daughter of a retired police chief, becomes his prey and is found dead in a horrific state. Her fiancé Soo-hyun, a top secret agent, decides to track down the murderer himself. He vows to do everything in his power to take bloody vengeance against the killer, even if it means that he must become a monster himself. “I Saw the Devil is a film that focuses on two men’s emotions and actions in torturing each other in the name of vengeance. This film could be a story about sharing the pain. In terms of fighting with the devil, it could be a religious story. It touches on morals and questions whether it is right to get bloody vengeance. It could also be a love story about a man who is willing to do anything for the one he loves.”

Jee-woon Kim
Kim Jee-woon (Seoul, South Korea) debuted in 1998 with the dark comedy The Quiet Family. In 2000 he directed the comedy The Foul King, abandoning the dark tones but continuing to study Korean society. He next explored various genres: after the horror movie A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), he moved on to noir with A Bittersweet Life (2005) and to westerns – with a tribute to Sergio Leone – The Good, The Bad, The Weird (2008), both of which were presented out of competition at the Festival in Cannes.
